This is the first part in a series of clips entitled "What We The Youth Are Tired Of." In this clip, DROP TV youth producers talk about the various rules that limit their creativity, maturity, and individuality. Essentially, the youth are tired of having too many rules in the first place!
exSPRAYssion
Two artists use graffiti to express their views on Middle Eastern relations. The two take turns adding words and images, before finally reaching an interesting understanding and respect for one another. This piece was created with Children's Media Project by youth involved in the Salaam-Shalom: Children of Abraham Film Project. This program introduced a group of Jewish and Muslim teenagers to the art of filmmaking for the purpose of opening dialogue between two minority communities in the Mid-Hudson Valley, diminishing tensions between the two cultures, and challenging religious and ethnic stereotypes.
unMADE
This parody of MTV's "MADE" offers a lighthearted look at the difficult conditions of living on the street when Melissa asks to be "unMADE" into a homeless person for the show. After a series of unfortunate incidents, however, the deeper messages of the video are made clear when Melissa realizes that her new minimum wage job may be a path to homelessness on its own.
Picture A Story
These photo essays, by Osman and Ishmael were created through The Documentary Project for Refugee Youth, an awesome program of Global Action Project. We will be highlighting the work of The Documentary Project for Refugee Youth throughout Season 3. The two stories in this episode are of two refugee students who have been relocated to New York City: Osman's story of joining the Project, and Ishmael's first encounter navigating the ins and outs of the city. We will see their fellow filmmakers stories in future episodes.
Young John Doe buys a cell phone with his birthday cash. After hastily signing a contract with "Mean Mobile," John Doe learns a valuable lesson on both contracts and earning good credit.
Why Did The Duck Cross The Road?
Crossing the road carries a whole new meaning in this clip! This claymation by Spencer Weaver won "Best Animation" in the Youth Media Program of the Hamptons International Film Festival. In this short, a smug duck learns a valuable lesson from an experienced hunter: don't think more highly of yourself then you ought!
The Hand Game
Instructional video? Or short documentary of the major defeat of Jared by Emily in the hand game? We're not sure (ask Malissa!), but we (especially Emily) like it. Sometimes this game is known as slaps, sometimes as "red hands" (ouch!). No humans were hurt in the making of this video.
Croation Animation: Kleo-Patra
This short animation from the School of Animation in Cakovec, Croatia, explores the comically dysfunctional relationship between Queen Cleopatra and her mistreated and mischievous servant. As things go wrong, Cleopatra grows angrier and more cruel, but her servant has the last laugh. This film was featured in the 2005 Youth Media Program of the Hamptons International Film Festival. We will be sharing animations from SAF Cakovec through the Season. We love their work! For more information on SAF Cakovec, you can visit www.safcakovec.com.
